Arts Education Course Requirements Changed

The Arizona State Board of Education has changed the Minimum Course of Study Requirements for Arts Education.

As of Monday, January 29th, the new State Board requirements are as follows:

R7-2-301. Minimum Course of Study and Competency Goals for Students in the Common Schools

A. Students shall demonstrate competency as defined by the State Board-adopted academic standards, at the grade levels specified, in the following required subject areas. District and charter school instructional programs shall include an ongoing assessment of student progress toward meeting the competency requirements. These shall include the successful completion of the academic standards in at least reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies, as determined by district and/or statewide assessments.

The Arts, which may consist of one or more of the following: visual arts, dance, theatre, music or media arts.

The previous requirements included Music and Visual Arts as separate requirements, with the Performing and Practical Arts listed as additional subjects that districts may elect to offer.

The Arts Education Office of the Arizona Department of Education felt it important you be made aware of these changes. For additional guidance and dialogue, please consider participating in the A3C initiative.
