Schools across Arizona are invited to participate in the 2022–2023 cohort for Project EASEL. Project EASEL (Empowering Arizona with Social-Emotional Learning) is a free, virtual professional learning and coaching series for Arizona schools. The project is offered by the ADE/ESS in collaboration with the University of Kansas Research Collaboration. Schools can prioritize which competency is best for their school (Self-Regulation, Self-Efficacy, or Assertiveness) for Year 1 and can choose to expand implementation in Year 2 or select a new competency.
- Self-Regulation is a proactive, self-directed process for attaining goals, learning skills, managing emotional reactions, and accomplishing tasks. Do your students have difficulty turning in homework, getting to school on time, focusing on academics during class, studying for tests, completing all aspects of projects, or managing their emotions? Self-Regulation instruction can help.
- Self-Efficacy is an individual’s perceptions about their capabilities to perform at an expected level, achieve goals, and complete moderately challenging tasks. Do your students lack confidence in their abilities, think that they will always do as well or as poorly as they have done in the past, give up easily when they encounter obstacles, or simply feel that they cannot learn the course content or succeed in school, sports, or the arts? Self-Efficacy instruction can help.
- Assertiveness is the ability to express your beliefs, wants, or feelings in a self-assured and direct manner while respecting others. Do your students have difficulty expressing themselves or asking for help when they don't understand, sharing opinions during group work, or standing up to their peers? Do they react aggressively in certain situations or respond in demanding or hostile ways instead of expressing their thoughts or needs respectfully? Assertiveness instruction can help.
Educators have seen the following impacts from competency instruction:
- Improved student responsibility
- Increased engagement in school
- More respectful communication with others
- Increased ability to express thoughts and feelings
- Improved behavior
Project EASEL is currently in the preliminary selection process to identify 15 schools for the 2022–23 school year. Administrators can express interest by completing the Declaration of Interest and scheduling a 30-minute conference call about the project.
