Supporting the Academic Achievement of Refugee and Other Newcomer Students in the Classroom and Beyond

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Refugee Student Support (RSS) and International Rescue Committee (IRC) are excited to provide this session within a collaborative webinar series designed to provide school and district-level personnel and other education stakeholders with the background knowledge, guidance, and tools to support refugee and other newcomer students and their families with the successful navigation of school systems to ensure their academic achievement.

In this session, facilitators review research-based practices in and outside of the classroom to ensure refugee and other newcomer student academic success, such as serving English language learners and students with disabilities, addressing trauma and limited or interrupted formal education, engaging and partnering with families to build school communities, and accessing wrap-around resources when needed.

Foundational Knowledge for Serving Refugee and Other Newcomer Students and Families

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Refugee Student Support (RSS) and International Rescue Committee (IRC) are excited to provide this session within a collaborative webinar series designed to provide school and district-level personnel and other education stakeholders with the background knowledge, guidance, and tools to support refugee and other newcomer students and their families with the successful navigation of school systems to ensure their academic achievement.

In this session, facilitators provide foundational knowledge necessary for serving refugee and other newcomer students and families, such as the refugee resettlement process, differences between various immigration statues and the implications for services, and cultural background information of current communities in Arizona.

Ensuring Educational Access for Refugee and Other Newcomer Students 

The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Refugee Student Support (RSS) and International Rescue Committee (IRC) are excited to provide this session within a collaborative webinar series designed to provide school and district-level personnel and other education stakeholders with the background knowledge, guidance, and tools to support refugee and other newcomer students and their families with the successful navigation of school systems to ensure their academic achievement.

In this session, facilitators provide guidance on ensuring refugee and other newcomer students have access to a free, accessible, and public education through covering key topics such as school enrollment, access to educational programming, responsibilities of local education agencies, and the role of refugee service organizations in supporting educational access of families and students.

Supporting Academic Achievement for Refugee and Other Newcomer Students

Understanding the vast experiences and dynamic situations of refugee and other newcomer students and their families is essential to supporting educational experiences. This session will provide an overview of the processes by which families arrive in Arizona, services and supports available to them, and what schools can expect upon a newcomer student’s enrollment. Best practices and resources will be shared with attendees to enhance the support they are able to provide newcomer students and their families, ensuring high levels of academic achievement.
