Welcome to Achievement Tutoring
Arizona Department of Education Mission
We are a service organization committed to raising academic outcomes and empowering parents.
The Achievement Tutoring Program is a new tutoring program designed to provide reading, writing, and mathematics tutoring for students in grades 1-8 who are testing below proficient in those areas on the statewide assessment Arizona Academic Standards Assessment (AASA). The tutoring is provided by both public school districts or charters and approved tutoring providers with the goal of increasing student proficiency on the statewide AASA in alignment with Arizona State Standards. There are many tutoring programs available to parents and students that the Arizona Department of Education offers. In order to serve as many students as possible, if your student is eligible for an already existing tutoring program, please utilize that program first before noting your interest in the Achievement Tutoring Program.
Existing Tutoring Programs:
- State Tutoring - If your student is enrolled in a D or F school, a tutoring program already exists for your student. To enroll your student and learn more, please visit the State Tutoring website.
If your student is not eligible for a program listed above, they may be eligible for the new Achievement Tutoring Program.
This program utilizes funds from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) program to provide tutoring services to those students who may have been impacted during the pandemic and is free to qualifying Arizona public school students in grades 1-8.
The Achievement Tutoring program will consist of:
- Six-week tutoring blocks with 60 minute sessions up to four days per week.
- Students complete a pre- and post-test to determine tutoring needs during each tutoring block.
- Tutoring sessions aligned to the Arizona Standards in reading, writing, and math.
- Communication between the parents and the tutor.
The program is open to any student enrolled in a public or charter school in grades 1-8 who has tested below proficient in reading, writing, or mathematics on the Arizona Academic Standards Assessment (AASA) and is not eligible for an existing support service the Arizona Department of Education offers.
The Achievement Tutoring Program is free to parents and students. The Arizona Department of Education is using ESSER III funds to provide tutoring for students who have been impacted during the pandemic.
The program includes tutoring in reading and writing aligned with the Arizona English Language Arts Standards. It also includes tutoring in mathematics aligned with the Arizona Mathematics Standards.
District tutors will consist of qualified teachers and substitutes. Tutoring providers in this program are all approved providers that meet Arizona Department of Education qualifications.
Public school districts or charter schools will set up tutoring sessions that can be in-person or online through a user-friendly platform.
Tutoring sessions are held for 60 minutes, up to four days per week, for a total of six weeks. Tutoring blocks will take place every six weeks with time between blocks.
Students in the program will be formally assessed at the beginning and end of each six-week tutoring block. These assessments help establish a baseline of a student's skills before tutoring and measure the progress made through tutoring. They are vital for tracking and improving student performance.
We are currently reviewing the Request for Proposals and Assessments for the Achievement Tutoring program. At this time there is no definite start date.
