CTE Programs with Embedded Academics

CTE Programs with Embedded Academics

What Is Embedded Academic Credit?

Some CTE programs have sufficient academic content to warrant granting academic credit. Approval of embedded academic credit is set forth in the guidelines of the Arizona Revised Statutes Code A.R.S. 15-90 and further supported by Arizona’s CTE strategic plan. ADE CTE is responsible for convening a content expert committee to analyze the CTE standards and academic standards to develop a crosswalk document showing the results.

Why Is Academic Credit Offered in a CTE Program?

  • Teaching academics in context with technical skills is an approach to learning that focuses on motivating and challenging students to connect what they learn with the world they live in.

  • High School graduation requirements may be met through the successful completion of a CTE program.

  • Offering academic credits in CTE programs is an excellent way to promote and advocate for CTE.

How Are CTE Programs Determined to Be Eligible for Academic Credit?

  • A committee of content experts representing CTE, and the academics analyzes the CTE standards for embedded academic content.

  • A crosswalk document is developed showing the alignment of relevant academic standards to the CTE standards. Additionally, each alignment offers a reasoning/rationale such as a lesson containing academic content.

  • Once the crosswalk document is formatted, reviewed, and approved, it is made available on the ADE CTE web page for programs and standards.
