INTERNAL PD OPPORTUNITY: Math Office Hours

The next school year is already here! The ADE Math Team will be starting Math Office Hours again this month. These meetings are designed to support general education and special education teachers individually as well as to problem-solve as colleagues on current issues faced in teaching and learning this fall. Please join us to learn and laugh with each other and to talk about what is working and how we can support each other and problem-solve together.

PD INFO: Thursday Afternoon LEarning Series (TALES) – “Navigating a Socially-Distanced Classroom for Students with Significant Learning Needs,” Thursday, August 20

Program Area: Special Education
Please join us for the next episode of Thursday Afternoon LEarning Series, or TALES, on Thursday, August 20 from 2:30 p.m.—4:00 p.m., when STAR Autism Support presents, “Navigating a Socially-Distanced Classroom for Students with Significant Learning Needs.” Due to COVID-19 and related guidelines from state and local health officials, school staff are faced with the challenges of maintaining social distancing on campus for the 2021 school year. STAR trainer, Kara Magee-Arick, will discuss best practices and tips for navigating the new guidelines for students with significant learning needs, as well as creative, evidence-based practices for teaching students routines focused on social distancing, the importance of wearing a mask, and staying healthy through self-care routines. In addition to providing free visual supports and resources, Jennifer will also discuss ways to support families navigating new challenges at home. Participants will learn strategies and tools that can be used with students in pre-K through postsecondary classrooms.

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: Integrity Error -10003 Deactivation

Due to changes in reporting to Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB) sites in FY21, Integrity Error -10003 will be deactivated.  Any PEA currently failing this rule should disregard.   

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: New SPED Integrity Rule -40078

Program Area: Special Education
Effective Fiscal Year 2021, a new integrity rule will be implemented for SPED Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Exit Code SPED05 (Moved, known to be continuing).Integrity Rule -40078: Exit code SPED05 is invalid with continuing site enrollment.

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: New AzEDS Portal Report: SPED74 - SPED Exit Report

Program Area: Special Education
The SPED74 – SPED Exit Report is a new report now available in the AzEDS Portal. This post-integrity report will populate students for your PEA who are ages 13 – 22 based on the Calculated Age for Exit. The SPED74 report is to aid in the determination of validating exit data for the ESS Annual Data Collection (ADC). This report will be available for FY21 data and forward only.

PD Opportunity: ADE/ESS Secondary Transition — Transition Tuesdays

The ADE/ESS Secondary Transition Unit is excited to bring back Transition Tuesdays for Fall in the 2020-21 school year. There will be multiple opportunities to engage with the team while they host both transition-related topics as well as office hours. Registration will be required for all events, and a link will be disseminated 1 week before each event. We hope you can attend Transition Tuesdays!

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: FY20 Annual Data Collection (ADC) – Final Submission

This is a friendly reminder that the FY20 ESS Annual Data Collection application is available and accessible to PEAs. Be aware, there are two separate due dates involved in this data collection reporting requirement. 

UPDATED Transition Guide Published by OSERS

OSERS published updates to "A Transition Guide to Postsecondary Education and Employment for Students and Youth with Disabilities, August 2020" to advance the office's efforts in ensuring that all students and youth with disabilities are equipped with the skills and knowledge to achieve their post-school and career goals.

Please join us for the next episode of Thursday Afternoon LEarning Series, or TALES, on Thursday, September 17 from 3:00 p.m.—4:00 p.m., when leaders from the Arizona Association of School Psychologists (AASP) present, “Considerations for Completing Educational Evaluations as Schools Reopen.”

EXTERNAL PD INFO: Behavior Threat Assessment: Best Practices for K-12 Schools, 9/24/20

Program Area: Special Education
This workshop will focus on the process and procedures needed to establish a consistent school/district-wide approach to behavioral threat assessment and management utilizing a multidisciplinary team. Critical factors discussed will include: current statistics, legal cases, post-incident reviews, and early identification of warning signs, primary prevention strategies to "break the code of silence; an overview of threat and risk assessment models and tools; assessment procedures; and strategies for interventions, postventions, and working with difficult parents.  Case study examples and forms will be shared to illustrate the process.

COVID-19 INFO: DDD Information Re: Services and Supports for School-Aged DDD Members Using Remote Learning During COVID-19 Emergency

Please see this attached memo from the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) regarding school-aged DDD members who are not able to attend in-person school and who need support to engage in remote learning. DDD worked with AHCCCS and ADE/ESS to determine the services that could be helpful for DDD members during the COVID-19 pandemic and beginning September 8, 2020, DDD may assess for and authorize Attendant Care and Nursing services to support DDD members who are learning remotely. 

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT UPDATE: ASDB Student Reporting

The ASDB Student Reporting guidance has been revised to clarify eligibility determination for students on an institutional voucher and the reporting of students receiving services from regional cooperatives.

The ADE/ESS Assistive Technology (AT) team is kicking off its 2020 AT Builders National Presenter Series with Chris Bugaj, “Make Learning Awesome for All.” This learning series requires a commitment of four weeks, and includes pre-recorded videos that are available to view at your convenience.

DATA MANAGEMENT ALERT: FY 2021 October 1 Data Collection

Program Area: Special Education
Public education agencies (PEAs) are required to verify the count of students participating in special education (SPED) on October 1, 2020. Verification will be completed via the web-based ESS October 1 Data Collection application, available through the ESS Portal via ADEConnect.
