Arizona Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program

Apprentice Description

An apprentice is a person who is working to become a professional teacher under the mentorship of a journeyworker (experienced mentor teacher). Utilizing an "Earn and Learn" model, AZTRAP apprentices will be paid for their work in the classroom while receiving funds to cover the cost of their coursework. Here are some highlights from the program and what it offers to apprentices:

  • Paid On-the-Job Learning: Apprentices work in a classroom which gives the apprentice meaningful hands-on experience while earning a wage.
  • Simultaneous Coursework: In conjunction with working in the classroom, the apprentice will complete college courses related to their area of instruction. Apprentices will receive funding to cover the costs of their coursework.
  • Mentorship: The apprentice works in a classroom under the mentorship of a journeyworker teacher. The apprentice is not to be considered a "teacher of record".
  • Demonstrate Competencies: While working in the classroom, the apprentice works to demonstrate 49 Teacher Prep Competencies that align with educational standards.
  • Time to Completion: Pre-Bac Apprentices without any college credit will complete the program in 4 years. Post-Bac Apprentices with college credit or an undergrad can complete their program in 2-4 years.

This structured teacher apprenticeship program allows participants to simultaneously gain theoretical knowledge and practical classroom experience, all while receiving support and compensation. Upon successful completion, apprentices will qualify for a professional teaching certificate in Arizona.

“The support and guidance from my mentor teacher have been the most valuable part of my apprenticeship. Observing, planning lessons together, and eventually teaching my own small groups and lessons helped me build confidence and gain real, hands‑on teaching experience. This program gave me a completely new perspective on teaching.”
— Apprentice, K–5
