Military-connected students bring unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives to Arizona schools. Many also experience transitions that can affect academic continuity, social connections, and overall well-being. As part of a broader population of highly mobile students, they often navigate changes that require schools to be intentional in creating welcoming, responsive, and supportive environments. The Arizona Purple Star Professional Development (PD) Training equips educators with the knowledge and tools needed to understand these experiences and ensure every student feels connected, valued, and prepared for success.
"Why This Training Matters"
Schools are often the most consistent environment in a student's life during periods of transition. For highly mobile students, a positive school experience can provide stability, foster belonging, and support academic success. While educators play a critical role in supporting highly mobile students, some of the most meaningful connections occur between students themselves. Research consistently shows that students who establish positive peer relationships are more likely to experience a sense of belonging and successfully navigate transitions. By understanding the experiences of military-connected students and other students experiencing mobility, school leaders can better leverage Peer-to-Peer programs that build belonging, ease transitions, and empower students to support one another.
Through this training, educators and Purple Star School Points of Contact (School-based Liaisons) gain practical strategies to:
- Strengthen school connectedness and student belonging.
- Support successful transitions for students entering or leaving a school community.
- Recognize the strengths and challenges associated with mobility.
- Build meaningful partnerships with families and community stakeholders.
- Create school cultures where every student can thrive.
As a Purple Star School Point of Contact (School-based Liaison), you are the bridge between military-connected students, families, staff, and community partners. Your leadership helps establish systems, practices, and relationships that foster belonging for students navigating transition. Completing this training is more than fulfilling a requirement; it is preparing to lead meaningful change that directly impacts student success.
Military-connected students are an important population within the broader group of highly mobile students, and schools that learn to support transition effectively create stronger outcomes for all students.
Supporting Highly Mobile Students Through Purple Star
A highly mobile student is one who experiences frequent school transitions due to circumstances beyond their control. Regardless of the reason for mobility, these students often share common experiences associated with changing schools, adapting to new environments, and building new support systems. Purple Star Schools intentionally create systems of support that help students and families navigate these transitions successfully.
These students often face challenges similar to military-connected students, including:
- Interrupted learning and credit gaps
- Difficulty forming lasting relationships
- Increased stress and adjustment periods
Who is a Military-Connected Student?
- A military-connected student is not defined by a single experience. They may be:
- A child of an Active Duty service member
- A child of the National Guard or Reserves
- A child in a dual-military family
- A child of a recently transitioned or honorably discharged veteran
- A child of a wounded, ill, or injured service member
- A child of a fallen service member
Military-Connected Students Today
- There are approximately 1.6 million military-connected children in the United States
- About 1.3 million attend public schools nationwide. Arizona has over 42,000.
- The majority attend local school districts rather than DoDEA schools
- Military-connected students move three times more often than their civilian peers, attending 6–9 schools during K–12 academic years
Understanding Their Experience
While many military-connected students share common experiences, their individual journeys may vary widely. Each student carries a unique story shaped by service, sacrifice, resilience, and life's many transitions.
Military-connected students often demonstrate:
- Resilience and adaptability
- Cultural awareness and global perspectives
- Independence and problem-solving skills
- The ability to build relationships in new environments
At the same time, they may experience:
- Frequent school transitions and curriculum disruptions
- Separation from a parent due to training or deployment
- Reintegrating after deployment
- Adjusting to new schools and peer groups
These experiences can impact:
- Academic continuity
- Social connections
- Emotional well-being
Purpose of This Course
This course is designed to:
- Build awareness of military culture and the military child experience
- Deepen understanding of academic and social needs
- Provide strategies to support transitions and continuity.
- Explore practices that strengthen belonging and school connectedness
- Strengthen your school’s readiness for the Purple Star School designation
How Purple Star Schools Support Highly Mobile Students:
