COURSE INTRODUCTION

About the Military Children in Our Schools Course

A military-connected student is not just a child with one parent on Active Duty. They are children of Reserve Duty and National Guard. They are a child with both parents serving. They are a child of a recently, honorably discharged service-member. They are a child of a servicemember recently killed in action.

According to the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) Active Duty Family Report, as of July 2020, there were 1,001,559 military-connected children aged 5-18 years old in the U.S.  Nearly 80% of these school-aged military-connected students attend school in their local school districts. Many military-connected children share experiences, cultural awareness, and socio-emotional responses to their unique lifestyle that increase their sense of connection with one another; however, the individual experiences of these students may vary greatly based on a variety of factors. This course was designed to increase educators' awareness and understanding of the experiences and challenges facing children in military-connected families.

This course is self-paced and is recommended for all Arizona educators. It is the required course for school Points of Contacts (POC) applying for the Purple Star School Award.

Each module is estimated to take approximately 30 minutes.

Special Note: Modules 1 to 4 assessments are now available through Google Forms.  Upon successful completion of each module, the AZPSS POC Training Certificate will be emailed.
