CTE Programs with Embedded Academic Credit

The process for Local Education Agencies (LEA) to issue academic credit upon completion of the CTE program is outlined in the Arizona Administrative Code Title 7, Chapter 2 State Board of Education, R7-2-302: Minimum Course of Study and Competency.

Local school district governing boards or charter schools may grant to CTE program completers credit in mathematics, science, and/or economics as approved by the State Board of Education. Click here LEA Guidelines.

How Does it Work?

The State Board of Education must approve the CTE program equivalent credit to be used toward graduation requirements.

After the second year of the CTE program, the academic credit is issued in place of the CTE credit.  Credits are not to exceed the State graduation credits required to graduate.

Transcript Example:

  •   Year 1 CTE Automotive  = 1 CTE Credit
  •   Year 2 CTE Automotive = 4th Year Math Credit (CTE Automotive Program)

CTE Programs Approved to Have Embedded Academic Credit

Awarded after Successful Completion of Courses 1 and 2 in the CTE program sequence.

Academic Area:

  • Economics 0.5 High School Credit
  • Mathematics 1.0 4th Year High School Math Credit
  • Science 1.0 High School Science Credit

Why Should Districts Offer CTE Programs with Embedded Academic Credit?

  • Teaching academics in context with technical skills is an approach to learning that focuses on motivating and challenging students to connect what they learn with the world they live in.
  • High school graduation requirements may be met through the successful completion of a CTE program.
  • Offering academic credits in CTE programs is an excellent way to promote and advocate for Student recruitment and retention.
  • As outlined in the CTE Strategic Plan.
  • Addresses Perkins Performance Measures for State Testing in Math and Science.

  …It’s good for students!

Offering embedded academic credit in a CTE Program is outlined in the Perkins Grant, increases academic performance, and helps to keep students in their CTE program longer.

ADE CTE administers the process to facilitate CTE academic credit Provides resources and training to schools.

  • Submits the program academic crosswalk to the State Board of Education for approval.
  • Updates crosswalks when standards are revised.
  • Forms teacher committees to create a crosswalk of the academic and CTE standards.
  • Publishes the crosswalk document online with reasoning and lessons for each academic alignment.
