Nomination Categories:
- Youth/Young Adult: Actively engaged and successfully navigating the secondary transition planning process.
- Community Member: Providing exemplary support for students and/or young adults with disabilities to enhance community-based experiences.
- Educator: PEA or Secure Care certified staff, support staff, related service providers, or administrators offering remarkable secondary transition services.
Nomination Deadline Extended
- Submit your nominations by Friday, May 22, 2026.
- Award winners will be notified in July.

2025 Secondary Transition Services Award Winners
Merejildo Valdez: Youth/Young Adult Award Winner
Merejildo is 20 years old and is a proud graduate of the Class of 2024. He is a dedicated Special Olympics athlete who excels in basketball, the softball throw, and track. As a member of Project YES, he has developed vocational skills and consistently demonstrates a positive work ethic. His journey reflects resilience, determination, and a strong commitment to personal growth, making him a valued role model in his school community.
George Fox: Community Member Award Winner
George is a resilient tradesman, entrepreneur, and mentor whose journey has taken him from special education student to successful business owner. He launched his flooring career through a youth employment program and later founded Fox’s Carpet Connection in Kingman with his son.
His business trains and employs local youth, including students from special education and emotional support programs. He also speaks at career events, championing the trades as a path to purpose for students who struggle in traditional academics.
Rhoma Geronimo-Pineda: Educator Award Winner
Rhoma brings 26 years of teaching experience, including 14 years in science and 12 in special education. She holds a degree in Physics and Technology and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education. As a resource teacher, Rhoma supports Native American students with diverse learning needs through individualized instruction. Rhoma is known for turning complex concepts into engaging lessons and guiding students beyond the classroom. Her commitment to inclusive education and lifelong learning is to make a lasting impact.
Yadira Lopez: Educator Award Winner
Yadira is a dedicated educator and passionate advocate for inclusive education with over 22 years of service in the Phoenix Union High School District. She has spent the past four years designing and implementing innovative transition services. She has been recognized for her leadership and unwavering commitment to creating student-centered programs. Throughout her career, Yadira has prioritized building trust within her school community, with families, and across the broader educational landscape. She regularly organizes events that extend support beyond the classroom.
